Effective foundation reinforcement solutions

Geogrids are products made from PE (Polyester), PP (Polypropylene), HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) plastics using extrusion and stretching methods. With the advantages of high tensile strength, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness, geogrids have been widely applied in construction projects such as reinforced retaining walls, structural stabilization, and weak soil foundation reinforcement.

Classification

Geogrids are classified into various types with diverse technical specifications. Depending on the material and manufacturing method, geogrids are divided into 3 groups: Uniaxial Geogrids, Biaxial Geogrids, and Triaxial Geogrids.

Uniaxial Geogrids

Uniaxial geogrids are constructed from various materials such as PP, PE, HDPE, or fiberglass. They have strength in the longitudinal axis direction, high roll length direction, and low deformation. They are durable under long-term load impacts.

Uniaxial geogrids are manufactured by knitting or punching and stretching methods to form a mesh capable of bearing force in one axis

Biaxial Geogrids are constructed from PP, PE, HDPE, or fiberglass (possibly combined with non-woven geotextiles depending on the material). Biaxial geogrids are manufactured by knitting or punching, stretching. They have equal strength in two directions. They utilize longitudinal and transverse axes through the intersections between the two axes to transmit force over a large area, forming a solid foundation layer and increasing the lifespan of structures.

Triaxial Geogrids are constructed from 100% monolithic Polypropylene (PP), manufactured by punching holes and stretching in three straight directions, forming a hexagonal pattern to connect the grid ribs. The grid ribs radiate in three different directions. Triaxial geogrids are the most advanced type of geogrid.

FUNCTION

  • Foundation stabilization, soil reinforcement, increasing load-bearing capacity (highways, railways, container ports, airport runways, bridge approaches…).
  • Reinforced earth retaining walls, gravity retaining walls (capable of constructing retaining walls up to 17m high and slopes up to 90 degrees).
  • Slope reinforcement, controlling potential landslides, and transportation roadbed slides.
  • Pile connection, creating a support grid to effectively transfer loads from the superstructure to all piles, saving on the number of piles needed.
  • Creating support grids on foundations with numerous voids.
  • Increasing load-bearing capacity, minimizing cracking and subsidence, stabilizing, and extending the lifespan of structures.
